Couples therapy in Richmond, VA
Couples therapy at Westwood means the two of you in the room with one therapist, who works with the relationship itself rather than taking a side. You bring the argument you keep having, and the work is understanding what drives it and finding something different to do with it at home. Sessions are at our Staples Mill Road office in Richmond, or by video.

Is this what you are looking for?
You don’t need a crisis to start, and you don’t have to agree on what the problem is before you come in. People book couples work here for reasons like these.
- You want a room where the same argument goes differently
- You’d rather work on the relationship than each go it alone
- One of you is ready and the other is unsure
- You want steps to practice between sessions, not only talk
- You’re rebuilding after a betrayal and want it paced
- A transition is straining things: a new baby, a move, an aging parent
- Parenting or blended-family conflict keeps landing on one child
- You want to start before resentment sets in
You don’t need to check every box. If a few of these feel familiar, get in touch.
How the work actually goes.
Your clinician shapes this around your goals, your history and your pace. These are the approaches they draw on.
Gottman-method couples work
Structured sessions that slow the argument down, so you can see what sets it off and how to repair afterward. You practice the same steps at home between sessions. Teresa Buczek, PhD, works this way.
Emotionally focused work
Attention to the feeling underneath the conflict, so you can say what you need plainly instead of the version that arrives as criticism or silence. Hank Matthews, LPC is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples.
One of you in individual therapy too
Couples work and individual work can run at the same time with different clinicians here, which keeps the couples sessions allied with the relationship rather than with one person in it.
Individual sessions alongside
Every clinician here also sees individuals. If one of you wants your own therapy while the couples work continues, we can usually arrange it in the same practice.
