Family therapy in Richmond, VA

Family therapy puts more than one member of a family in the room at the same time: a parent and a child, or a child and the wider family, working on the thing between them instead of each working on it alone. We offer family therapy in Richmond, VA at our Staples Mill Road office and by video, with the two clinicians here who do this work.

Is this what you are looking for?

Families usually call after the same argument has been running for months and nobody in it can see a way out. These are the reasons they give.

  • The same argument keeps happening and nothing about it changes
  • Your child behaves differently at home than anywhere else
  • You and your co-parent disagree about how to handle it
  • A separation, a move or a new step-family is unsettling everyone
  • A death or a serious illness has changed how the family works
  • One person is in individual therapy and the rest of you want to help
  • A teenager has stopped speaking to one parent
  • Everyone is walking on eggshells around one subject

You don’t need to check every box. If a few of these feel familiar, get in touch.

How we treat family therapy

How the work actually goes.

Your clinician shapes this around your goals, your history and your pace. These are the approaches they draw on.

Everyone in the room

A session with a family in it is a different thing from a session about a family. What people actually do with each other turns up in the room, and that is the part that can be worked on.

Family systems thinking

A child’s difficulty is rarely only the child’s. Looking at the patterns a family has settled into usually does more than trying to change one person inside it.

Parents supported too

Parenting through a hard stretch is its own strain. Part of this work is time for parents, on what to do next and on what it has been costing you.

Individual work alongside

Some people need their own hour as well. We have fourteen clinicians, so a family member can see someone here separately while the family work continues.

What to expect

Here’s what to expect.

  1. Reach out

Call 804-264-0966 and our front desk will help match you with the right clinician, usually in a single phone call. Check with your insurer separately to confirm that clinician is in network.

  2. Your first session

A relaxed, conversational meeting about what brings you in, what you’ve tried, and what you’re hoping for. You won’t be judged, and there’s no pressure to have it all figured out.

  3. Ongoing care

Most clients start weekly, then taper as things improve. You and your clinician set the goals and revisit them together.

Common questions

Family therapy, answered.

Still have a question? Call 804-264-0966 . Our front desk is glad to help.

Who has to come to a family session?

Whoever the work needs, and that changes as it goes. Some sessions have the whole family, some have parents only, some have one parent and one child. Your clinician will say who to bring before each appointment.

Who does family therapy at Westwood?

Nancy MacConnachie, Ph.D. and Emily Mangan, LPC are the two clinicians here who see families. Availability changes, so call 804-264-0966 and we will tell you where each of them stands.

Is family therapy the same as couples therapy?

No. Couples therapy is the two of you and the relationship between you. Family therapy usually involves a child or a wider family group, often a parent and a child working on something together. If it is the two of you, start on our couples therapy page instead.

How is a family session billed?

Sessions are $175 and the first intake evaluation is $200, the same as individual therapy. How a plan covers a family session varies, so call the number on your insurance card and ask, and talk it through with your clinician at the first appointment. We cannot check your benefits for you.

Can my child also see someone individually?

Yes, and it is common. A child can see one clinician here on their own while the family works with another. They are down the hall from each other, which makes coordinating the two simpler than it usually is.

Ready to talk to someone?

We’re accepting new clients now. Reach out today and we’ll help you take the first step, usually within a week or two.
