Is this what you are looking for?

There is no bar you have to clear before you call. These are the kinds of reasons people give us when they do.

  • Something has been off for months and is not shifting on its own
  • You want to work on it one-to-one, with no one else in the room
  • Talking it through with friends has stopped helping
  • A doctor, a teacher, or someone at home suggested you talk to a professional
  • You are in the middle of a change: a move, a job, a diagnosis, a loss
  • You want a private hour to think out loud
  • You have been in therapy before and want to start again with someone new
  • You want to talk through whether medication might help

You don’t need to check every box. If a few of these feel familiar, get in touch.

How we treat individual therapy

How the work actually goes.

Your clinician shapes this around your goals, your history and your pace. These are the approaches they draw on.

Finding the right clinician

Our clinicians work in different ways and with different age groups. When you call, we ask enough about your situation to point you toward someone who fits your age group and what you are dealing with.

The intake evaluation

Your first appointment is a longer conversation about what brought you in, what your history looks like, and what you want to be different. It ends with a plan: how often to meet, what to start on, and whether anyone else should be involved.

How the work gets done

Methods vary by clinician: cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR, Internal Family Systems, mindfulness and body-based work. Your clinician will tell you what they are drawing on and why, and you can ask them to explain anything that is unclear.

Therapy alongside psychiatry

If medication might help, our psychiatrist, Wendy S. Cohen, MD, can see you for a psychiatric evaluation and stay in touch with your therapist. The two are separate appointments, and you can have one without the other.

What to expect

Here’s what to expect.

  1. Reach out

Call 804-264-0966 and our front desk will help match you with the right clinician, usually in a single phone call. Check with your insurer separately to confirm that clinician is in network.

  2. Your first session

A relaxed, conversational meeting about what brings you in, what you’ve tried, and what you’re hoping for. You won’t be judged, and there’s no pressure to have it all figured out.

  3. Ongoing care

Most clients start weekly, then taper as things improve. You and your clinician set the goals and revisit them together.

Common questions

Individual therapy, answered.

Still have a question? Call 804-264-0966 . Our front desk is glad to help.

How do I get started?

Call 804-264-0966, or send an appointment request through this site. We will ask what you are looking for, what your schedule allows, and whether you would rather meet at the office on Staples Mill Road or by telehealth, then match you with a clinician who is taking new clients.

What happens in the first appointment?

The first appointment is an intake evaluation, which is a longer conversation. Your clinician asks about what brought you in, your health and family background, and what you hope will change. You can ask questions too, including how they usually work and whether they think they are the right fit. If formal psychological or neuropsychological testing is what you need, we refer you to a testing practice in the Richmond area.

How often will I come, and for how long?

That is set with your clinician at the intake and revisited as things change. Some people work on one specific problem and finish in a few months. Others stay longer, or come back later when something new comes up. Nothing at the first appointment commits you to a fixed number of sessions.

What does individual therapy cost?

The therapy intake evaluation is $200. Sessions after that are $175, the same fee for adults and for children and teens, and family or marital sessions are $175 as well. Psychiatric appointments are billed separately: $350 for the intake evaluation with Wendy S. Cohen, MD, then $100, $150, or $200 for follow-ups contingent on time spent. Your portion is due at the time of service.

Do you take my insurance?

We do not check your benefits for you. Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask two things: whether the clinician you want to see is in network, and what your plan covers for outpatient mental health. Our clinicians do not all take the same plans, so ask about the specific person by name.

Ready to talk to someone?

We’re accepting new clients now. Reach out today and we’ll help you take the first step, usually within a week or two.
