Typical Therapy Session

Are you new to therapy? Here’s what to expect in a typical therapy session.

Therapy sessions generally last from 45 to 55 minutes. The first session is called an initial evaluation. During this meeting, you and your provider will discuss your presenting concerns and review relevant history to more fully understand the situation. At this time, you and your provider will discuss treatment options and develop goals for your treatment as well as a plan to achieve these goals. You will also discuss how frequent your sessions will be.

Therapy is a collaborative process between you and your provider and, as treatment progresses, the plan can be reviewed and modified as needed. You can expect that your provider will be respectful, non-judgmental and sensitive to your situation. You can also expect that all of your information will be treated with the highest level of confidentiality.

If your provider is unavailable when a crisis occurs, another provider from The Westwood Group will attend to your needs.

If you and your provider believe medication might be helpful for you, your provider will work with a psychiatrist or your family physician to obtain a medication evaluation. If you should need to go into the hospital, your provider will continue to have contact with you while you are hospitalized.
