Jeff Knighton, LCSW

Jeff Knighton is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working with teenagers and adults from high school through late adulthood.

He received a BA in Psychology and JD from the University of Virginia. He spent several years in forensic psychology research, where he saw the effects of trauma. This led to a desire to move from research to direct treatment of individuals suffering from trauma. As a result, he enrolled in and received an MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jeff’s clinical training was completed at VCU’s University Counseling Services, where he provided individual, group, and crisis counseling to undergraduate and graduate students. For the past several years, he has worked in community mental health, providing individual and group therapy to clients facing various issues including substance use, serious mental illness, PTSD, depression, grief, life transitions, LGBTQIA+ issues, and anxiety.

Jeff has received training in EMDR, dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, and mindfulness-oriented recovery enhancement. He works from a person-centered perspective, informed by internal family systems, motivational interviewing, and psychodynamic theories.

Jeff believes that each client possesses the internal resilience to address challenges and flourish in their lives. He uses humor and a non-judgmental style to create a welcoming space where clients can explore their inner strengths and motivations, ultimately creating the change they seek.
